4.2 Rings and Fields

Definitions

We are going to define a ring (R+⋅) open paren R plus times close paren or simply R R.

Data:

  • A set R R of elements.

  • An operation +:R×R→R plus colon R times R right arrow R called addition.

  • An operation ⋅:R×R→R times colon R times R right arrow R called multiplication.

Axioms:

  • (R,+) open paren R comma plus close parenis an abelian group.

  • Multiplication is left and right distributive over addition:

  • a⁢(b+c)=a⁢b+a⁢c a times open paren b plus c close paren equals a b plus a c and(a+b)⁢c=a⁢c+b⁢c open paren a plus b close paren times c equals a c plus b c for all a⁢b⁢c∈R a b c is a member of R

  • Multiplication is associative: (a⁢b)⁢c=a(b⁢c) a b times c equals a of b c for all a⁢b⁢c∈R a b c is a member of R.

  • Multiplication has a neutral element denoted by 1 1.

In this case, we say that (R,+,⋅) open paren R comma plus comma times close paren is an associative ring with an identity. We will use the term ring to denote an associative ring with an identity. As before, we usually say that R R is a ring assuming that the operations in use are clear. The neutral element with respect to addition is denoted by 0 0 and is called zero. If a∈R a is a member of R is an arbitrary element, its inverse with respect to addition is denoted by -a negative a. For any a,b∈R a comma b is a member of R, the expression a+(-b) a plus negative b will be denoted by a-b a minus b for short. If in addition we have

  • Multiplication is commutative: a⁢b=b⁢a a b equals b a for all a⁢b∈R a b is a member of R.

The ring is said to be commutative.

Field

A field is a set F F which is closed under two operations + plus and × times such that:

  • F Fis an abelian group under+ plus

  • F-{0} F minus the set 0 the set F F without the additive identity0 0is an abelian group under× times

Alternative Definition: A field is a commutative ring where every non-zero element is invertible with respect to multiplication, and 1≠0 1 is not equal to 0. More explicitly, if we add the following conditions to a commutative ring:

  • Every non-zero element is invertible with respect to multiplication: for every a∈R∖{0} a is a member of R set minus the set 0, there exists an element b∈R b is a member of R such that a⁢b=b⁢a=1 a b equals b a equals 1.

  • 1≠0 1 is not equal to 0

The ring is said to be a field. In this case, the inverse element for a a is denoted by a-1 a to the negative 1 power.

Subring

Let R R be a ring. We are going to define a subring T⊆R T subset of or equal to R.

Data:

  • A subset T⊆R T subset of or equal to R.

Axioms:

  • (T,+)⊆(R,+) open paren T comma plus close paren subset of or equal to open paren R comma plus close paren is a subgroup.

  • T T is closed under multiplication.

  • T T contains1 1

Ideals

Suppose that (R+⋅) open paren R plus times close paren is a ring. I am going to define an ideal I I in the ring R R.

Data:

  • A subset I⊆R I subset of or equal to R.

Axioms:

  • (I,+)⊆(R,+) open paren I comma plus close paren subset of or equal to open paren R comma plus close parenis a subgroup.

  • For any r∈R r is a member of R we have

r⁢I={r⁢x|x∈I}⊆I r I equals the set of all r x such that x is a member of I subset of or equal to I and I⁢r={x⁢r|x∈I}⊆I I r equals the set of all x r such that x is a member of I subset of or equal to I
