Problem Statement

Given an oracle ƒ f with hook: {0,1}n→{0,1} the set 0 comma 1 to the n-th power right arrow the set 0 comma 1, determine whether this oracle is

  • Constant: All inputs map to the same output

  • Balanced: Exactly half of the inputs map to the same output

Classical Computation

Given we have a bit-string of length n n consisting of either {0,1} the set 0 comma 1

  • Best Case: You only input 2 2 queries and see their results are different, immediately telling you they are balanced

  • Worst Case: 𝙾⁡(2n) monospace O of open paren 2 to the n-th power close paren

Bernstein-Vazirani

Given an oracle ƒ f with hook: {0,1}n→{0,1} the set 0 comma 1 to the n-th power right arrow the set 0 comma 1, where we know ƒ⁡(x) f with hook of x will output the dot product between x xand a secret string s s mod⁡(s∈{0,1}n,2) the mod of open paren s is a member of the set 0 comma 1 to the n-th power comma 2 close paren, find s s
