Indefinite Integral. A function F⁡(x) F of x is called an antiderivative of a continuous function ƒ⁡(x) f with hook of x if F⁡(x)′=ƒ⁡(x) F of x prime equals f with hook of x. Indefinite integral of ƒ⁡(x) f with hook of x represents a family of all functions F⁡(x)+C F of x plus C, where C C is a constant.

∫abƒ⁡(x)⁢dx the integral from a to b of f with hook of x d x =limn→∞⁡∑i=1nƒ⁡(xi)⁢Δx equals lim over n right arrow infinity of the sum from i equals 1 to n of f with hook of open paren x sub i close paren triangle x

Evaluation of an indefinite integral:

F⁡(x)∣ab=F⁡(b)-F⁡(a) F of x vertical bar sub a to the b-th power equals F of b minus F of a

Integration Techniques

Substitution

Let u=g⁡(x) u equals g of x, then du=g′⁡(x)⁢dx d u equals g prime of x d x. Replace∫(ƒ⁡(g⁡(x))⁢g′⁡(x)⁢dx)=∫(ƒ⁡(u)⁢du) the integral of open paren f with hook of g of x g prime of x d x close paren equals the integral of open paren f with hook of u d u close paren.

Integration by Parts

∫u⁢dv=u⁢v-∫v⁢du the integral of u d v equals u v minus the integral of v d u

Partial Fractions

Decompose rational P⁡(x)Q⁡(x) P of x over Q of x into simpler fractions; integrate term‑by‑term.

Trig Substitution

Use x=sin⁡θ x equals sine theta, tan⁡θ,sec⁡θ tangent theta comma secant theta to simplify a2±x2 the square root of a squared plus or minus x squared.

Improper Integrals

Check limits: ∫a∞ƒ⁡(x)⁢dx=limb→∞⁡∫abƒ⁡(x)⁢dx the integral from a to infinity of f with hook of x d x equals lim over b right arrow infinity of the integral from a to b of f with hook of x d x
